Insight of the Day: Most Millennial Parents Aren’t Married—But They Want to Be

Millennial parents are reshaping traditional notions of family structures and life milestones. Here's a breakdown of the key findings:

1. Marital Status:

- YPulse's Weddings report data shows that 42% of Millennial parents are currently married. This marks a significant departure from previous generations, as Millennials and Gen Z are waiting longer to get married.

- The number of married parents in North America has decreased from 57% in 2020 to 42% in 2024, indicating a shift away from marriage before having children.

- Additionally, 11% of Millennial parents are divorced.

2. Age and Parenthood:

- The median age for a first marriage in the United States is 30 for men and 28 for women, according to U.S. Census data. However, the average age young people say they'd like to have kids is 31. This suggests that parenthood is not necessarily tied to marital status.

- YPulse's Parenting report data shows that the average age for Millennial parents to have their first child is 23.

3. Single Parenthood and Relationship Status:

- 30% of parents identify as single parents, either raising their child alone or co-parenting outside of a relationship.

- Despite this, the majority of parents (79%) believe that marriage is not a prerequisite for starting a family with someone.

- When asked about their relationship status, responses vary, with 10% of parents being single and not looking to date, 15% single and looking to date, 18% living with a partner, 6% in a committed relationship, 5% in a complicated situation, and 4% engaged. Notably, 21% of dads say they are single and looking to date, which is 11 percentage points higher than moms.

4. Desire for Marriage:

- Despite the current trend of delaying marriage, the majority of Millennial parents express a desire to get married someday. They view obtaining a marriage license as important due to financial benefits, health benefits, legal protections, and as a symbol of long-term commitment.

- Only 8% of parents express a lack of interest in marriage, indicating that most intend to marry eventually.

In summary, while Millennial parents are deviating from traditional family structures by having children before marriage, the desire for marriage remains strong among this demographic. As they continue to redefine norms, it's likely that their children, Gen Alpha, will witness their parents' ceremonies in the future.
