Born Kelela Mizanekristos in Washington, D.C., and raised in suburban Maryland, she initially studied jazz before discovering her own voice through a love of forward-thinking electronic production. Her breakout mixtape Cut 4 Me (2013) established her as a boundary-pushing force, followed by the conceptual Hallucinogen EP (2015) and her critically acclaimed debut album Take Me Apart (2017), which charted on the Billboard 200 and reached the Top 20 on the R&B/hip-hop chart.

After a four-year hiatus, she returned with “Washed Away,” leading into her 2023 album Raven, a project she described as “an affirmation of Black femme perspective in the midst of systemic erasure.” The club-oriented companion project RAVE:N, The Remixes followed in 2024, reinforcing her duality: intimate yet kinetic, experimental yet emotionally grounded.
